The Power of Looking Up

A few weeks ago, I started working with a new client—a teenager who's carrying more weight than he'd like and has very little experience in the gym.
One thing caught my attention almost immediately.
The entire workout, he looked down.
Not once in a while.
Almost all the time.
At first glance, you might think he was just focused on what he was doing.
But after more than 15 years of coaching people, I recognized something else.
He wasn't looking down because he was concentrating.
He was looking down because he didn't want to be seen.
And honestly...
I understood.
We've All Been There
Walking into a gym for the first time can be intimidating.
You don't know how the equipment works.
You don't know if you're doing the exercises correctly.
You wonder if people are watching.
You worry about looking out of place.
So you look down.
You stay quiet.
You try not to attract attention.
The problem is, that mindset doesn't just stay in the gym.
It follows us into job interviews.
Relationships.
School.
Business meetings.
Public speaking.
Life.
The Moment Everything Changes
At one point during our workout, I simply said,
"Look up, chest up...we're proud when we do this"
Not because his exercise required it.
Because his confidence did.
When we constantly look down, we unintentionally tell ourselves we're trying to disappear.
When we look up, our posture changes.
Our breathing changes.
Our awareness changes.
Most importantly...
Our mindset begins to change.
Looking up says,
"I belong here."
Even if you're still learning.
Nobody Starts as an Expert
Here's something I wish more people understood.
Every confident person you admire was once the beginner.
Every athlete.
Every successful business owner.
Every personal trainer.
Every coach.
Every public speaker.
Every single one of them started by not knowing what they were doing.
The difference wasn't talent.
The difference was they kept showing up anyway.
Confidence doesn't come from already knowing.
Confidence comes from believing you're capable of learning.
Failure Is a Teacher
One of the biggest misconceptions about success is that successful people don't fail.
They do.
Constantly.
The difference is they don't let failure define them.
They let it teach them.
Every mistake is feedback.
Every awkward moment is experience.
Every failed attempt is another step toward becoming better.
If you wait until you're confident to start...
You'll never start.
Confidence is built through action—not before it.
Stop Trying to Be Perfect
So many people never begin because they're afraid of looking foolish.
Here's the truth.
Nobody remembers the person who didn't know what they were doing.
They remember the person who kept coming back until they figured it out.
The people you think are judging you?
Most of them are too busy worrying about themselves.
And the ones who truly know what they're doing?
They usually respect beginners because they remember exactly what it felt like to be one.
The Power of Looking Up
Looking up isn't just about where your eyes are.
It's about how you approach life.
It's choosing curiosity over fear.
Growth over comfort.
Progress over perfection.
It's believing that today's uncertainty becomes tomorrow's confidence.
The gym is just one place where that lesson happens.
Life gives us countless opportunities to practice it.
Final Thoughts
To my young client...
I hope one day you realize that nobody expected you to know everything on day one.
I certainly didn't.
What impressed me wasn't how much you knew.
It was that you showed up.
And if you keep showing up, keep learning, and keep looking up...
One day you'll walk into that gym with your head high—not because you've mastered every exercise, but because you've mastered something far more important:
The confidence to keep learning.
